Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law - 25 Years at the Forefront of Commercial Law

Twenty-five years is both a short and a long time. In the span of human history, it may appear brief. Yet, when we reflect on the world as it was a quarter of a century ago, the changes and developments since then reveal just how significant such a period can be. Twenty-five years ago, the September 11 attacks had not yet occurred, Sweden had been a member of the European Union for only five years and the social media platforms that now dominate our daily interactions did not exist. In this light, the last twenty-five years is an era of transformation.
In parallel, the Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law, the SCCL or simply the “Centre”, whose 25th anniversary this anthology commemorates has undergone its own remarkable transformation. Over these years, nearly fifty books have been published within the SCCL’s series of publications, each contributing valuable insights to the field of commercial law. Currently, thirty-two researchers are affiliated with the SCCL, a testament to its intellectual vitality and the attraction it holds for scholars.
The purpose of this anthology is to capture and convey the spirit and trajectory of the SCCL; to chart its origins, its development over the past quarter-century, and to offer a glimpse into its current life and activities. It contains twenty-five articles – one for each year of the SCCL’s existence – contributed by academics and legal practitioners who all have a close association with the SCCL. The volume also seeks to illuminate the cooperation the SCCL maintains with universities both within Sweden and across Europe. These partnerships are central to the SCCL’s mission, fostering a fertile ground for scholarly exchange and joint ventures.
My own association with the SCCL began on a cold March day in 2022 when I first stepped into the SCCL’s premises at Stockholm University. The warm welcome extended to me by Professors Lars Heuman and Göran Millqvist, as well as by all my future colleagues at the SCCL, gave me the courage to leave behind a long career as a litigator and advokat in private practice and embrace the path of a doctoral candidate. Since that day, I have found the SCCL to be a unique environment where scholarly discourse is paired with congeniality, and where excellent jurisprudential research is combined with a profound understanding of the practical realities of the business community. These past years have been the most rewarding and enjoyable of my professional life, and I sincerely hope to remain part of the SCCL for the next twenty-five years.
Finally, this book and the celebration of the SCCL’s 25th anniversary would not have been possible without the support and efforts of many. We would like to express our warmest thanks to the law firms Baker McKenzie, Cederquist, Cirio, DLA Piper, Gernandt & Danielsson, Lindahl, Mannheimer Swartling, Roschier, Snellman, TM & Partners, Vinge and White & Case. Their contributions have helped bring this project to fruition, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
