A Common Frame of Reference for European Contract Law

In October 2009, during Sweden’s EU Presidency, a major conference took place to address the question of how, within the framework of the EU, use can be made of extensive academic projects offering proposals for a harmonisation of private law or indeed a codification of European civil law. The conference was jointly convened by the French, Czech and Swedish Presidencies and had been inaugurated with a similar conference in October 2008 at the Sorbonne University in Paris. The Swedish conference was organised by the Swedish Ministry of Justice, and the speakers included the contributors of the papers reproduced below. The Stockholm conference was a joint project by the Swedish Ministry of Justice and the Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law at the Stockholm University Faculty of Law. Publication of the papers presented at the conference has been delayed by a combination of circumstances, but since the issues remain as pertinent today as they were then, we take pleasure in presenting them in this publication from the Centre.
